The CST ensures the safety and security of the Jewish community in Britain. The CST has a proud heritage dating back to the Jewish defence organisations formed in the 1930s to combat Oswald Mosley and his followers. Today the principal threats to the community are terrorism and antisemitic attacks. As the Jewish community’s only defence organisation the CST has grown significantly. We now have four offices and 55 members of staff. The CST is a registered charity whose work is provided entirely without charge and is solely funded by donations from the Jewish community. The ethos of the CST is that the Jewish community is responsible for its own security. The CST draws upon a network of 3,000 trained volunteers throughout the country. They are at the heart of the organisation and come from all spheres of communal life, regardless of religious observance, political beliefs, age or gender. These personnel are trained by the CST, and by the Police, so that they can provide the highest level of security for the Jewish community.

The CST is always looking for new volunteers and full training will be provided.

Council of Christians and Jews Birmingham

E-mail: ccj.bham@gmail.com

The Council of Christians and Jews works with Christians, Jews and members of other faith communities who are approaching inter-faith dialogue. Founded in 1942 by Chief Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz and Archbishop William Temple. Since the end of the Second World War, Christians have sought ways in which they can reach out to their Jewish brothers and sisters. Today, CCJ works to create constructive dialogue between Jews and Christians on a wide variety of topics, including the Israel-Palestine situation and the global economic crisis. CCJ continues to work tirelessly to combat antisemitism and intolerance, working with a variety of Christian, Jewish and secular community groups.

In Birmingham we meet roughly once a month, usually on zoom but with occasional face to face events. Our topics range from music and art, through theology and history, to issues of current concern. Some evenings are formal lectures, others informal discussion. Anyone from the community wishing to become involved on the committee would be very welcome.

We are a small mixed voice choir of singers who perform, enjoy, and enthuse about Jewish music. We have a rich and diverse repertoire covering many aspects of Jewish culture including liturgical and synagogue pieces set to modern, traditional, and folk arrangements. We have Jewish and non-Jewish members.

The choir sings in Yiddish, Hebrew, English, and Ladino. This is often complemented with commentaries on the history and significance of each piece in relation to musical development and religious emphasis within individual festivals and services.

Over the years, the choir has performed all over the country in many varied venues including cathedrals, churches, synagogues, and City of Birmingham events; the choir has also sung in the USA. We have sung at weddings, interfaith events and at the local Limmud. We select each programme to suit the occasion and audience, with the emphasis on, and commitment to, sharing Jewish music with others.

WJR was established in 1933 and rescued 80,000 Jews fleeing from Nazi persecution. This included 10,000 unaccompanied children (Kindertransport), some of whom receive our help to this day.

Over the years, WJR has rescued Jews from all over the world, including former Soviet Union and Middle East countries. Today WJR is primarily involved in humanitarian aid in Eastern Europe, where it provides food packages, home care, hot meal programmes, help with medicines and clothing. It has also established Welfare Centres for pensioners living below the poverty levels. Wherever there is a Jew of any age in need, WJR is there to help.

Our local Committee organises an Annual Appeal Lunch, which is usually held in November and raises funds through donations on a regular basis which we are happy to receive at any time or to mark a significant occasion.
